What are the standard aspect ratios?
Standard aspect ratios such as 4:3, 5:4 and 16:9 are commonly used in applications in industrial and consumer areas. These displays have a range of resolutions such as 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1280 x 1024 or full HD 1920 x 1080.
To simplify this, the larger the number of the screen resolution, the better. It does not really matter what physical size or display ratio the screen is, the best quality image comes with a higher resolution. The most common resolutions in industrial applications are:
- 800 x 600 pixels for small 8-inch units with a 4:3 aspect ratio
- 1024 x 768 pixels for screen sizes from 10 to 15 inches with a 4:3 aspect ratio
- 1280 x 1024 pixels for 17” and 19” units with a 5:4 aspect ratio
- 1920 x 1080 pixels for all products with a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio

Sometimes traditional aspect ratios and/or screen resolutions are not suitable for the project. There will be occasions where a PC or monitor may be required to run a non-traditional ratio. Some situations require large quantities of information to be displayed on screen full time. For example, you may need two applications running at the same time in a split-screen format. In order to make this operation as efficient as possible, you need to have a very wide display. A great option for such applications is a 16:10 ratio where it is possible to fit two full pages of text side by side, eliminating the need to switch between opened windows.
