What is a NEMA Rating?
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) defines standards used in North America for various grades of electrical enclosures typically used in industrial applications. An NEMA enclosure might be rated to provide protection against environmental hazards such as water and dust.
NEMA Comparison Table
NEMA Codes | IP Codes |
NEMA 1 | IP20 |
NEMA 2 | IP22 |
NEMA 3R, NEMA 3RX | IP24 |
NEMA 5 | IP53 |
NEMA 12, NEMA 12K, NEMA 13 | IP54 |
NEMA 3, NEMA 3X, NEMA 3S, NEMA 3SX | IP55 |
NEMA 4, NEMA 4X | IP66 |
NEMA 6 | IP67 |
NEMA 6P | IP68 |
What is IP Rating?
IP Rating (Ingress Protection Marking, IP Code or International Protection Marking) is an international standard that aims to provide users more detailed information than general terms waterproof and dustproof. IP rating classifies levels of sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against environmental factors such as water, dust, intrusion, and accidental contact.

What do IP Ratings numbers mean?
There are two numbers following letters IP and each of them has a specific meaning. The first number indicates the degree of protection (of people) from moving parts, as well as the protection of enclosed equipment from foreign bodies. The second defines the protection level that the enclosure has from various forms of moisture (drips, sprays, submersion etc). The larger each digit is, the greater the protection. Where there is no data available to specify a protection rating with regard to one of the criteria, the digit is replaced with the letter X. The digit 0 is used where no protection is provided.
First Digit (intrusion protection)
0 | No special protection |
1 | Protection against solid objects greater than 50 mm in diameter |
2 | Protection against solid objects greater than 12mm in diameter |
3 | Protection against solid objects greater than 2.5mm in diameter |
4 | Protection against solid objects greater than 1.0mm in diameter |
5 | Protected against dust that may harm equipment |
6 | Totally dust tight |
Second Digit (moisture protection)
0 | No special protection |
1 | Protection against condensation |
2 | Protection against water droplets deflected up to 15° from vertical |
3 | Protected against spray up to 60° from vertical |
4 | Protected against splashing water when the enclosure is tilted at any angle up to 15° |
5 | Water projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm) against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects |
6 | Water projected in powerful jets (12.5 mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects |
7 | Protection against temporary immersion (up to 1m of submersion for 30 minute duration) |
8 | The equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which shall be specified by the manufacturer. However, with certain types of equipment, it can mean that water can enter but only in such a manner that it produces no harmful effects. The test depth and/or duration is expected to be greater than the requirements for IPx7, and other environmental effects may be added, such as temperature cycling before immersion |
9K | Protected against close-range high pressure, high temperature spray downs |
